Social Is the New Search: How Brands Earn Trust in the AI Era (2026)
25 Sept 2026 · @Aditya
In 2026, customers find you on Instagram, YouTube and LinkedIn first, and on Google second. Or they skip both and ask ChatGPT or Gemini.
Think about the last time you checked out a new restaurant, clinic or software vendor. You probably didn't open ten blue links. You looked at their Instagram, scrolled a few Reels, read the comments, and checked whether real people were tagging them. If the page was dead, the last post was from 2023, or the comments were full of complaints, you moved on in seconds.
That habit is now how most buyers behave. Search has split into two parts: AI answers that give a summary without a click, and social platforms where people go to see proof. The brands that show up in both win trust. The ones that don't are quietly disappearing, and that's why companies are rushing to build their social presence.
Google still gets the searches, but it no longer sends the clicks
In the first four months of 2026, 68% of Google searches in the US ended without a single click, according to SparkToro's clickstream study. Ten years ago that figure was about 45%, and in 2024 it was 60%.
AI is the big reason. Google's AI Overviews now appear on more than 20% of searches, and where they appear, click-through rates drop by nearly 60%. The answer sits right at the top of the page, so there is no reason to visit a website. Add ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity, where people ask full questions and get one summarised answer, and the old path of "rank on page one, get traffic" is breaking.
This doesn't mean SEO is dead. It means ranking alone no longer builds a relationship. A buyer might learn your name from an AI answer, but they won't trust you until they see you somewhere that feels real. More and more, that place is social media.
Social platforms have become search engines
For younger buyers, social is now the first place to search. In a 2025 Sprout Social survey of 2,280 users, 41% of Gen Z said they turn to social platforms first for information, ahead of search engines (32%) and AI chatbots (11%). Across all ages, 37% prefer social for product reviews.
The reach is enormous. DataReportal's Digital 2026 report counts 5.66 billion social media user identities, about 69% of the world's population. Online adults spend roughly 18.5 hours a week scrolling social and video feeds.
India shows this even more clearly. A BofA Global Research study reported in August 2026 found Indians spend about 49 hours a month on Instagram and 47 hours on YouTube, the two most-used apps. That is nearly two full days a month on each. When your customer in Jaipur, Pune or Dubai wants to check out a brand, the Instagram profile is often their first stop.
Each platform now plays a clear search role:
• Instagram: "Is this brand real and active?" Profiles, Reels, tagged posts and highlights work like a storefront.
• YouTube: "How does it work?" Reviews, tutorials and comparisons for bigger purchases.
• LinkedIn: "Can I trust this company?" Founder posts, case studies and team credibility for B2B buyers.
• Facebook and WhatsApp: Community groups, reviews and direct conversations, still strong in tier-2 and tier-3 cities.
Why trust now lives on social
Trust has become as important as price and quality when people decide what to buy. That's the finding of the 2025 Edelman Trust Barometer brand report, which surveyed 15,000 people in 15 countries. Social media is where that trust is now built or lost. In Sprout Social's survey, 76% of users said social content had influenced a purchase in the past six months, rising to 90% for Gen Z.
A website shows what a brand says about itself. Social shows what is actually happening. Buyers look for four signals:
1. Proof of life. Recent posts, Stories and replies show that the business is active and that someone is responding.
2. Real faces. Founders, team members and customers on camera feel more trustworthy than stock photos and ad copy.
3. Public feedback. Comments, tags, reviews and DMs are visible. Buyers read how you handle a complaint as carefully as how you celebrate a win.
4. Other people's voices. User-generated content, creator reviews and testimonials count for more than anything the brand says about itself.
In AI search, you are often just a name in a summary. On social, buyers can see you, hear you and watch how you treat people. That is why trust has moved there.
Why companies are scrambling, and where most go wrong
Companies are rushing to social because it now affects discovery, trust and AI visibility all at once. A March 2026 Peec AI study of 30 million sources found that Reddit, YouTube and LinkedIn are the domains AI search engines cite most. Google's AI answers also lean on Facebook and review sites. In other words, what people say about you on social platforms is now feeding the AI answers your buyers read.
That creates three pressures:
• Lost traffic. Businesses that relied on blog traffic and Google rankings are watching clicks fall, even when their rankings hold.
• Trust gap. A brand with a strong website but an empty Instagram looks outdated, or worse, fake.
• Rising ad costs. Paid ads work much harder when buyers already recognise and trust the brand. Without that, cost per lead keeps climbing.
The rush has led to predictable mistakes:
1. Posting for volume, not value. Three generic posts a week with stock images build no trust at all.
2. Chasing every trend. Sprout Social's 2025 research found about a third of consumers think brands jumping on viral trends is "embarrassing".
3. Faceless accounts. No founder, no team, no customers. Just a logo talking to itself.
4. Ignoring comments and DMs. Every unanswered question is public proof that nobody is listening.
5. Treating social as a separate silo. Social, SEO, ads and reviews tell one story. When they contradict each other, both buyers and AI systems lose confidence.
A 7-step playbook for building trust on social in 2026
The goal is not to post more. It is to become the brand people and AI systems both recognise and trust.
1. Treat your profile like a homepage. Clear bio, what you do, who you serve, location, contact button and link. Pin your three strongest posts: a result, a testimonial and a "who we are".
2. Optimise for social search. Use the words customers type in captions, on-screen text, alt text and video titles, such as "digital marketing agency in Jaipur" or "Ayurvedic skincare for oily skin". Instagram, YouTube and LinkedIn all index this text.
3. Put a face on the brand. Founder videos, behind-the-scenes clips and team introductions build trust faster than polished graphics. People trust people.
4. Turn customers into content. Reshare tags, collect video testimonials, and run simple UGC campaigns. Partner with micro-creators whose audience matches yours, not just whoever has the most followers.
5. Answer questions in public. Build a content series from real FAQs and DMs. Reply to every comment within a day. These answers are exactly what AI systems pick up when summarising your category.
6. Show up where AI looks. Keep an active LinkedIn company page and founder profile, publish useful YouTube videos, maintain Google Business Profile reviews, and take part in genuine discussions on communities and forums.
7. Measure trust, not just likes. Track saves, shares, profile visits, DMs, branded searches and "found you on Instagram" leads. Put paid ads behind posts that are already building trust.
A simple weekly rhythm for most small and mid-sized brands: 3 to 4 Reels or short videos, 1 carousel that teaches something, daily Stories, 2 to 3 LinkedIn posts from the founder, and one fixed slot for replying to every comment and DM.
The bottom line
In 2026, search is where people hear about you, and social is where they decide whether to believe you. Google and AI assistants will keep answering questions without sending clicks. The brands that grow will be the ones people already recognise, see as active, and hear good things about from real customers.
You don't need to be everywhere. You need to be consistent, human and useful on the two or three platforms your buyers actually use.
